Timeline
What happens, and when
Do not book this without looking at your calendar first. The swelling in the days after each session is considerable and visible, and it is the single most common reason people regret the timing rather than the treatment.
-
Before
Consultation
The provider pinches the area to judge how much of the fullness is fat rather than loose skin or a prominent muscle band, because only fat responds. They should be frank about how many sessions your case is likely to need, and about the swelling. Photographs are usually taken, since progress across sessions is hard to judge from memory.
-
Day 0
The appointment
A grid is marked on the skin under the chin and a series of small injections is placed across it. Ice or topical numbing is usual. The treatment itself takes fifteen to twenty minutes and stings noticeably as the product is placed.
-
Day 1-3
Marked swelling
The defining stage. The area under the chin swells substantially and visibly, and it is firm and tender. People routinely describe looking worse than before they started. This is the expected response rather than a complication, and it reflects the product doing what it was given to do.
-
Week 1-2
Swelling subsides
The swelling reduces over one to two weeks, though some firmness and numbness under the chin can persist for longer. Numbness in the area is common and resolves on its own.
-
Week 6
Next session
Sessions are typically spaced at least a month apart, often six weeks. Most people need two to four in total, and the provider reassesses before each one rather than committing to a fixed number at the outset.
-
Month 3+
The final result
Judged some weeks after the last session, once all swelling has resolved. The fat cells that were destroyed do not regenerate, though remaining fat in the area can still change if your weight does.
Cost
What it costs in Napa
Most people in the Napa area pay roughly $600 to $1,200 per session, with most plans needing two to four sessions. Prices vary by provider and treatment area, so ask for a quote at consultation.
Pricing is by vial, and the number of vials per session depends on the size of the area. Since most people need several sessions, the meaningful figure is the cost of the whole course, which commonly lands between two and four times the single session price.
The comparison worth making is against surgical options. Submental liposuction is a single procedure with a single recovery and generally a higher up-front cost, and it addresses a larger volume of fat in one go. Injections avoid surgery and anesthesia but trade that for repeated sessions and repeated swelling. Which is the better value depends on how much fat is there and how you feel about surgery, and a surgeon and an injector will give you different but equally honest answers.
Ask specifically how many sessions the provider expects. A quote for one session is not a quote for the treatment.
Questions worth asking about price
- How many sessions do you expect for my case, and what is the total?
- How many vials per session, and is that priced separately?
- What happens if I stop partway through a paid package?
- Would you say I am a better candidate for surgery than for this?
Suitability
Who it tends to suit
This suits people with a moderate, discrete pad of fat under the chin, reasonable skin elasticity, and a stable weight. Being pinchable is the practical test the provider will apply: fat responds, and everything else in the area does not.
It suits several situations poorly. Fullness that comes mainly from loose skin will not improve, and reducing the fat beneath lax skin can occasionally make the looseness more apparent. A prominent band of muscle, or a jaw that sits far back in profile, both produce a similar appearance for entirely different reasons and neither responds to this. Very large volumes of fat are usually better addressed surgically.
There is one specific risk worth understanding. A nerve running near the jawline controls part of the movement of the lower lip, and irritating it can produce a temporarily uneven smile. It resolves on its own but can take weeks. Careful marking and staying within the defined treatment area are what prevent it, and it is a fair thing to ask a provider about directly.
Providers screen for pregnancy and breastfeeding, infection in the area, difficulty swallowing, and previous surgery or treatment in the neck.
Plan the calendar before you book
- Expect to look visibly swollen for several days after each session.
- Count back from anything you cannot move: a wedding, a presentation, a photograph.
- Sessions are spaced a month or more apart, so the whole course spans months.
- Many people schedule the first session at the start of a quiet stretch.
Questions
Questions people ask
How bad is the swelling, honestly?
Considerable and obvious. For the first few days after each session the area under the chin is visibly swollen, firm and tender, and many people say they look worse than when they started. It settles over one to two weeks. Anyone telling you this is a lunchtime treatment with no downtime is not describing it accurately.
Do the results last?
The fat cells destroyed by the treatment do not regenerate, so the reduction achieved is durable in a way most treatments on this site are not. That said, the fat that remains in the area behaves normally, so significant weight gain can still change how the area looks. Nothing here is guaranteed against future change.
How many rounds does this usually take?
Most people need two to four, spaced a month or more apart. The number depends on how much fat is present and how you respond to the first session, which is why providers reassess between sessions rather than selling a fixed block up front.
Is surgery a better option for me?
Sometimes, and a good provider will say so. Larger volumes of fat, or a case where loose skin is the main problem, are often better addressed surgically. Injections suit moderate, discrete fat in someone who would rather avoid a procedure. It is worth getting both opinions if you are near the boundary.
Why is my chin numb?
Numbness in the treated area is a common and expected effect after these sessions, and it resolves on its own, sometimes over several weeks. It is worth mentioning to your provider at the next visit, but on its own it is not a sign that something has gone wrong.
