The area
A wine region that straddles a county line
Los Carneros is one of the few American Viticultural Areas that sits in two counties at once, running across the southern ends of both Napa and Sonoma. It is defined by climate rather than by administrative boundaries: cool air and fog pull in off San Pablo Bay and hold the temperature down, which is why the district grows pinot noir and chardonnay where the valley floor further north grows cabernet.
The landscape is open, low and windy, quite unlike the enclosed valley to the north. Housing is spread thinly across it, mostly along the roads connecting Napa to Sonoma, and there is no commercial center of any kind. The di Rosa art center and a number of sparkling wine houses are among the few landmarks that give the area a public presence.
For anything routine, residents look toward one of two towns. Which one is largely a matter of which road you are nearest, and people living here are generally already in the habit of splitting their errands between two counties.
The practical consequence for treatment is that Carneros residents have more genuine choice than the population density would suggest, because two separate markets are within reach.

Questions
Questions from Carneros
Is Carneros in Napa County or Sonoma County?
Both. The Los Carneros wine district straddles the line between them, which is why residents here routinely use services in either. Which county you pay taxes in and which town you drive to for an appointment are separate questions.
Are there any providers in Carneros itself?
No. The district is rural and has no commercial center. Every resident travels, most often to Napa or Sonoma depending on which is nearer.
Does it matter which county I choose?
Not for the treatment. Licensing standards are statewide, so a licensed provider in Sonoma is held to the same requirements as one in Napa. The only practical differences are distance, price and availability.
How do I compare across two counties?
Consultations, and be straightforward about the drive. Call (707) 207-8167 and we will point you toward licensed providers on the Napa side, which is the market we cover.
