The area
Famous on a wine label, quiet on the ground
Rutherford is one of the best known names in California wine and one of the least developed places in Napa County. The appellation covers a section of the valley floor whose soils gave rise to the phrase Rutherford dust, and the vineyards here include some of the oldest continuously planted ground in the valley.
As a settlement it is barely one. A handful of buildings sit around the junction where Rutherford Cross Road meets Highway 29, and the historic estates along the road are wineries rather than civic anchors. There is no town center, no school district office, no cluster of shops.
The population is small and lives among the vineyards. In practice Rutherford functions as part of St Helena's catchment: residents shop there, see professionals there, and would go there for aesthetic treatment as a matter of course.
The one advantage of the position is that Rutherford Cross Road, like Oakville Cross Road to the south, links Highway 29 to the Silverado Trail, which gives residents two routes in each direction.
Distances
Where the providers are
Rutherford leans north. St Helena is close enough that the drive to Napa is rarely worth making unless the provider is the reason.
-
3 mi N
St Helena
A few minutes up the valley, and the practical answer for almost everything. The upper valley's cluster of practices, and the town Rutherford residents already use for most other services.
-
15 mi S
Napa
Half an hour or so, and the county's widest choice of providers. Worth the drive for a specialized treatment or when you want to compare injectors, and hard to justify for a routine repeat visit.
-
Two routes
Highway 29 or the Silverado Trail
Rutherford Cross Road connects them. The Silverado Trail is generally the calmer road, which is worth knowing when the valley fills up on summer weekends.
Treatments
What people in Rutherford ask about
Nothing is offered in Rutherford itself. St Helena covers most needs, and Napa covers the rest.
Questions
Questions from Rutherford
How far is St Helena really?
Only a few miles, and a matter of minutes outside of peak traffic. It is close enough that most Rutherford residents treat it as their local town rather than as somewhere they travel to.
Is it worth going to Napa instead?
Sometimes. Napa has more providers, which matters if you want to compare consultations or need a treatment nobody up-valley offers. For anything routine, or anything requiring a course of visits, St Helena is the sensible default.
Are there providers among the wineries?
No. The estates along Rutherford Cross Road and Highway 29 here are wineries and hospitality businesses. Some offer spa services, which is a different category from medical aesthetic treatment and should not be assumed to include it.
Where should I start?
With St Helena, unless there is a specific reason to look further. Call (707) 207-8167 and we will point you toward licensed providers in the upper valley.
